Started playing music at age of 10 both guitar and violin. Formed my first band in 1961 , formed the ORANGE MACHINE the only recognised psychedelic Progressive band from Ireland in the 60′s . Leader of country and bluegrass band Cotton Mill Boys in the 70′s .Past 10 years guiding and managing top instrumental band GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT.

Noel McHale – MCD
Senior live booking agent festivals and major events, MCD. McHale is one of the key bookers with MCD some of the leading artists he’s brought to Ireland during his seven year tenure including Pavarotti, Queen, The Killers, Snoop Dogg, P Diddy, The Game and Rihanna. Pre-MCD Noel promoted The Bothy Band and The Boomtown Rats in the West, assisted Ollie Jennings getting the Galway Arts Festival off the ground and establishing the Bulmers comedy festival and its UK counterpart festival.

Gary Monroe – Monroe’s Galway
Promoter and Booking agent for Monroes Galway.

Alan Murray – Mazar’s Ireland
Alan Murray is a tax specialist and a chartered certified account with over 15 years experience with a particular emphasis on clients involved in the entertainment sector. Alan is a senior member of the Mazars OJK Entertainment Division and his clients range from global international high profile entertainers to indigenous performers based primarily in the Irish market place. Alan has experience in advising on the tax issues of all elements of entertainment income streams for performing musicians including recording and publishing royalties and live performance income. He also has particular expertise in dealing with HMRC in terms of agreeing UK withholding tax for live performances in the UK. Through his work in this area Alan has developed leading entertainment contacts in both the UK and US and can offer a global service in this sector.

Benny Taaffe – Vantastival (Music Festival)
Benny is one of the main organisers and founders with his partner, Louise Tangney. They have a combined experience of twenty years in the festival industry, having worked at festivals all over Ireland, the UK and the USA, including Oxegen, Electric Picnic, Glastonbury, Reading and the Burning Man festival in Nevada.

John Weston – Backstreet Merchandising
John started working with Backstreet International Merchandise in London in 2003 as well as managing various bands at the time, most notably a period with Ned’s Atomic Dustbin. He set up Backstreet’s Irish operation on 2008 and now works with bands such as The Coronas, Altan, Horslips, Sharon Shannon, Clannad, Afro Celt Sound System, And So I Watch You From Afar to name a few. Backstreet have offices in London, New York & Dublin; www.bsimerch.com catering for bands full merchandise needs from supply, touring and e-commerce. John serves on the board of the Music Managers Forum Ireland and is one of the founding directors having previously been an active member of the MMF UK.

Stuart is a professional industry consultant with over twenty years experience.
He has acted as a small business adviser; consultant and training provider working both directly with private sector clients and via the whole range of public sector agencies in the UK since 1987. Since 1990 he has concentrated on delivering small business advice and learning programmes to the cultural and creative industries, specialising in services to the music industry.
In 1995 he began working in close collaboration with the Music Manager’s Forum (the only international trade association of artist managers in the music industry) and became Head of Training and Education for the organisation. In conjunction with this in 1999 he also became Project Manager of ‘Manchester City Music Industry Network’ an agency established to help facilitate the economic development of the independent music industry in Manchester, NW England.

Shane Dunne – M.D., Curve Music Management
Curve Music was formed in 2008 and is involved mainly in event management as well as tour bookings and artist management. Curve released Perfect Stranger, the debut album by The Chapters in 2009 while also booking college tours for the likes of The Coronas and Delorentos. Curve Music also promote the annual INDIEPENDENCE Music & Arts Festival which was named as one of the top ten small festivals in Europe in 2010. Other events have included Cork Week in Crosshaven and numerous smaller festivals and events. Shane is also the booker of the 1,000 capacity Savoy Theatre in Cork City.

Gaby Smyth – GSCO
Gaby Smyth is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and is principal of Gaby Smyth & Company, Chartered Accountants & Registered Auditors. The firm has been in practice for almost 15 years, specialising in the music, film and theatre arts. He is also Finance Director for U2. He is currently Chairperson of Screen Producers Ireland, the Film Factory, and the Irish section of Amnesty International.

Jonny Boyle – Modern Green Agency
Creative Director, Modern Green; a creative experiential agency.
Worked for 5 years with Heineken & O2 on developing music campaigns including Heineken Green Energy, Heineken Green Synergy, Heineken Green Spheres, Oxegen & Electric Picnic.

Gary Cohen – M.D., Brand Aid 4 Music
Gary spent 10 years at the forefront of the advertising business. In March 2000, having recognised the enormous potential of music as a marketing weapon in the years ahead, Gary established Brand Aid. His invaluable experience in developing brand strategies and his unique understanding into the workings of the music industry were crucial elements in the success of the company to-date. Brand Aid has now established ongoing working relationships with artist management, promoters, agents and media in both the U.K and Ireland. This in turn allows Brand Aid to deliver insight, understanding and compelling solutions to all the brand’s with whom they work.

a brief update on Saturday’s training event with our panelist biographies below. Unfortunately, Victor Finn of IMRO is unable to attend the session this time around.

STUART WORTHINGTON
Stuart Worthington is a professional industry consultant with over twenty years experience. In 1995 he began working in close collaboration with the Music Manager’s Forum and became Head of Training and Education for the organisation. NICK ROBINSON
As Senior VP Business Development for Kobalt Music Publishing, Nick started working with Kobalt in 2008. Prior to this Nick had a six-year stint with BMI, the U.S. performing right organization, where he most recently served as senior executive writer/publisher relations, Europe. During his time with BMI, Robinson was responsible for the signing and relationships with such major artists as Radiohead, Natasha Bedingfield, Mika, James Blunt, Keane, Duffy, Sigur Ros, Hard-Fi, Klaxons, Aqualung, and Estelle. Prior to that, he worked with EMI Records U.K. for five years, three of which were served as head of the company’s A&R department.

Edison runs Collective Management whos clients include The Shoos, Royseven, Jamie Lawson, Laura Izbor.

STEVE LINDSEY
Steve’s introduction to the music industry came in 1975 whilst studying at Liverpool College of Art when, as a member of the band Deaf School, he signed with Warner Bros Records. He entered the world of music publishing in 1985 as Professional Manager with Warner Chappell. He joined Island Music as General Manager in 1990 and was associated with The Beautiful South, Massive Attack, Shakespear’s Sister and Irish artists such as U2, Hinterland and Gavin Friday. Steve established Elevate Music in 2004 and the company currently represents Irish writers such as Mundy, Cathy Davey, Robotnik, Alphastates and score composer Niall Byrne. Steve sits on the boards of IMRO and MCPS Ireland.

JOHNNY LAPPIN
Johnny Lappin is one of the most experienced and knowledgeable music publishers working at the forefront of the industry today. He is Secretary of the Music Publishers Association of Ireland (MPAI) and is also on the boards of both IMRO and MCPS Ireland. He is currently the Managing Director of Liffey Publishing Ltd whose clients include the multi-platinum selling Irish female group Celtic Woman and the sensational new ballad group The High Kings. He administers the publishing interests of MCD boss Denis Desmond’s Evolving Music Company whose roster includes the million-selling Rodrigo y Gabriela. Also among this extensive roster are such dynamic current acts like Ryan Sheridan, The Minutes and Fight Like Apes. Over the years Lappin’s music publishing activities brought him an impressive list of clients, including Clannad, Aslan, Sharon Shannon, The Celtic Tenors, Rob Burke, Liam Reilly, Paddy Reilly and many other top Irish artists.

EILEEN O’GORMAN
Eileen advises a broad range of clients in the corporate sector on commercial issues and has been involved in the negotiation and drafting of a wide range of commercial agreements, corporate restructuring and commercial transactions. She has also advised industry clients in contentious issues such as breach of contract, patent infringement, breach of copyright and passing off. Eileen also provides an eclectic mix of music and media clients with advice on recording, management and publishing agreements and generally in the area of copyright law and intellectual property rights. She has provided opinions on copyright issues to both broadcast and print media. She has written for the Sunday Business Post and Sunday Tribune and been a contributor on Sky News and Newstalk.

Alexis Vokos – Delphi

Alexis runs The Delphi Label, Dublin-based label and management for a small but slowly growing roster of artists with the same ethos which champions the artist/manager relationship as a partnership and collaboration and view all the tools and channels available in the online world as a huge opportunity. Currently artists are Deaf Joe and Sacred Animals. Alexis got his start working in the industry in London, including at Stephen Budd Producer Management, Metropolis Studios and Music Week magazine, before joining Independent Sound Management (ISM) in London in 2003. Alexis was involved in the management of artists including Tunde (Lighthouse Family), Catherine Feeny and HAL, working on both Major and Independent album releases (Sony BMG, Rough Trade). In 2006, Alexis was closely involved in securing Catherine Feeny’s publishing deal with Warner Chappell, establishing Tallgrass Records and releasing Catherine’s album ‘Hurricane Glass’ independently before the album was licensed on to EMI and re-released in 2007. He has lived in Dublin since 2008.

Mark Crossingham – Universal

Mark is managing director of Universal Music Ireland effective Sept. 1.During his 12 years at Universal, Crossingham has run the UK international marketing division, its consumer and media division and also worked as deputy MD of Universal Island. For the past two years he has been general manager of Concord Music Group for Universal Music Group International.

Shane McDonnell – Clannad

Shane began his career running a studio in London in the early 80’s he has managed band such as It Bites, Wasp and monster magnet. Shane set up MDM Artist Management in 1996 where MDM’s artist roster includes Clannad, Bridin Brennan, and producer Chris O’Brien

Luke Griffin – PPI

Luke has a keen interest in music & has played in many bands over the years & he did the occasional singer songwriter nights in Dublin. Luke has a Diploma in Popular Music having studied at the Rock School in Ballyfermot from 2003-2005. Luke has been working with PPI since 2007. He was Distribution Co-ordinator from August 2008 and is the Distribution Manager from March of this year.

Eanna Casey – RAAP

Eanna set up Recorded Artists and performers (RAAP) in 2001. RAAP is a non profit company which collects royalties for performers when sound recordings are publicity preformed and broadcasted and to-date has collected and paid out €15 million to artists

Willie Ryan – Barrister

William Ryan B.L is a Dublin based Barrister. His practice includes work in the areas of entertainment, copyright, trademark, contract and intellectual property. William’s work in music is primarily based around copyright, publishing contracts and record contracts. His practice is talent oriented, but he also represents various record labels both here in Ireland and abroad. Representative clients currently include a variety of artists with major or independent record label deals. He advises several promoters and venues on various aspects of their business including licensing. He is a graduate of UCD with a Masters in Commercial Law.

Mick Roe – Richter Collective

Michael co-founded the Richter Collective with Barry Lennon after a number of split label releases. The label has become one of the most innovative and talked about in the independent sector and has worked on releases by artists such as Adebisi Shank, Not Squares, Logikparty and Enemies.

Terry McGuiness, Tour Manager

In the past year Terry has been tour managing The Coronas around Ireland and the rest of Europe whilst also handling backline duties, mainly looking after the bands guitar players. He has also been tour managing and doing the same guitar duties with Mundy for several years now. Other bands he has tour managed include Turn and Humanzi. Terry has also covered backline duties for other bands including Skin, The Thrills, Idlewild, The Frames, Declan O’Rourke, Paddy Casey, Christy Moore, Future Kings of Spain, Bell X1, Sack, The Brilliant Trees, Royseven and Mick Flannery. Terry also has worked as stage managers at Oxegen Festivals and the Trinity Ball for the past three years.

Karl Geraghty, The Workman’s Club

I got my start in box offices, working at HQ, The Ambassador, The RDS and more outdoor events then I can remember l time position with Ticketmaster in 2002 where I worked as a liaison with all of the shops selling Ticketmaster tickets. I also started in the Vicar Street box office around the same time and in 2005 was offered a full time position as a booker for Aiken Promotions. I worked primarily with upcoming Irish and international acts (Wolf Parade, Fionn Regan, Noisettes, Fleet Foxes) as well as booking Irish tours for the likes of Morrissey, Damien Dempsey, Charlie Pride and Bell x1. In May of last year I left Aiken Promotions to set-up The Workman’s Club, which has played host to such acts as Imelda May, Anna Calvi, Villagers, Damien Dempsey, CW Stone King and Dan Le Sac v Scroobious Pip since it opened in September. We also won a Hot Press/IMRO venue award in January.

Beckie Sugden, The Agency Group

Based in the London office of one of the world’s most notable booking agencies, Beckie Sugden’s roster spans over 20 artists in the broad hard rock genre including And So I Watch You From Afar, God Is An Astronaut, Blitz Kids and Architects. The Agency Group represents Muse, My Chemical Romance, Paramore and many others for live bookings.

Ken Allen, Faction Records

Ex-Hot Press staffer Ken Allen was an Irish A&R scout for both Independiente and Polydor UK before setting up Faction Records. In 2006 he was A&R and executive producer for The Blizzards’ album A Public Display Of Affection. Ken now works as an A&R consultant for Atlantic Records UK as well as managing Choice Award nominated James Vincent McMorrow who has scored a deal with EMI Publishing and guested with Mark Ronson’s big band. Ken also had a hand in Television Room’s 2009 digital only album Coffee Houses and Director’s I’ll Wait For Sound.
